1.4 Getting around the city

The city center is walkable and otherwise the best option is to use either the metro or a taxi.

Metro: the network has good coverage of the city. It costs 5 hrivna per ride and is even cheaper in a monthly subscription. The directions are in Cyrillic and in English. During rush hour it can be overcrowded. Many expats use the metro system.

Taxi: can be ordered through apps on your mobile phone (requires the local language) or by calling (rare cases operators speak English) or by flagging down a taxi. The safest way is to ask your Ukrainian colleague to assist you. Rates are often fixed.

Flagging down a taxi is done regularly but requires knowledge of the city to agree on the fare. Most problems with taxis are blown up rates. Especially the taxis around the big international hotel chains tend to have this habit.

Prices for taxis per ride in the city center are $2 (60hrivna) to $3 (85h) per ride. In the late evening it can go up to $4 (110h) to $5(140h). For rides throughout the whole city one should not pay more than $10 (280h).

Marshrutka: this is a minibus network that costs 4 to 6 hrivna per ride. It is rather difficult to figure out the route they make but when a metro is not available it is a cheap way to precede your trip.
